The specs, in one place

Spotify Canvas size, length and specs

9:16 vertical. 3 to 8 seconds. No audio. It loops. Uploaded per track in Spotify for Artists. Everything Muzie exports already fits, so the only decision left is which eight seconds.

First video free to try. Portrait export, trim to the loop, upload.

The four specs that matter

Meet these and the upload goes through. Miss one and Spotify rejects the file.

Step 1

9:16, vertical

Portrait, the same shape as a phone screen. A landscape or square clip gets cropped or refused. Every video here exports portrait already.

Step 2

3 to 8 seconds

Shorter than three is rejected, longer than eight is rejected. Trim to the window that repeats; the top of the range hides the restart better.

Step 3

Silent

Spotify plays the Canvas behind the track with no audio of its own. Any sound in your file is ignored, so use it only to guide the lip sync.

Step 4

It loops

The clip repeats for as long as the song plays. The last frame should flow into the first, or the listener sees a jump every few seconds.

The rest of the spec sheet

The details that catch people out on upload.

Format

A standard video file. MP4 is the safe choice and what you get on export. Spotify also accepts a still image as a Canvas, but a still is exactly what the feature exists to replace.

Resolution

At least 720 by 1280 pixels. Higher is fine and looks better on modern phones. Export at the higher quality tier for anything you want to keep.

Where to upload

Spotify for Artists, per track, from the app or the web dashboard. You need to be verified as the artist on that profile.

When it appears

Usually within hours of upload, sometimes up to a day. It shows in the mobile app only, on the Now Playing screen, and not on desktop.

Who sees it

Listeners on the Spotify mobile app, which is most of them. It plays behind the track title and controls, so keep the subject bright and central.

Why bother

Spotify has said tracks with a Canvas get more shares, saves and profile visits. For eight seconds of work it is the best return on the release checklist.

Spotify Canvas spec questions

The things artists ask before uploading.

9:16 vertical, at least 720 by 1280 pixels. A higher resolution in the same ratio is fine and looks sharper on modern phones.

Between 3 and 8 seconds. Anything outside that range is rejected on upload. Aim for the longer end so the loop restart is less noticeable.

No. It plays silently behind the track. Audio in the file is ignored, so the only reason to include it is to guide the lip sync while you make it.

A standard video file such as MP4, in portrait, or a still image. Video is what the feature is for; a still Canvas is barely different from the cover art it replaces.

In Spotify for Artists, on the track you want it for. You need to be verified as the artist on that profile. It typically appears within hours, and only in the mobile app.

Yes. Every video exports portrait, which is the Canvas ratio. Trim to a 5 to 8 second window, download, and upload the file as is.

Portrait, silent, looping, short. Make the clip, keep the window that repeats, and upload it. It takes minutes.
